Prerequisite: Completion of Art I, II, III with a B average, and instructor’s approval/recommendation

(UC approved “f”)

The Advanced Placement Studio Art program is intended for highly motivated students committed to the serious study of art.  Students in this course may submit a 2-D Design Portfolio which includes photography, design, and traditional art mediums of drawing and painting.  The majority of the course requires that students design their own artistic exploration through the creation of a cohesive body of 10 works in emulation of a studio artist. In this course, the student will produce a portfolio and submit it to the College Board. The portfolio consists of a body of work that demonstrates the student’s ability to deal with the fundamental concerns of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in a self-designed, sustained investigation so that the student may be given credit, advanced placement, or both, at the college level.  A donation towards art supplies is requested during online registration and can be made in Infinite Campus in the Fees section.  Student may take AP 2-D Design one year and AP Drawing the next or vice versa.

AP Art History emphasizes a deep conceptual understanding of art historical concepts. This yearlong course is designed to be a chronological and thematic examination of art, design, and architecture.  Students will develop the essential skills of visual and contextual analysis. By examining works of art from diverse cultures and the relationships among these works, students develop an understanding of global artistic traditions. Students analyze works of art in their contexts, considering issues of patronage, gender, politics, religion, and ethnicity. The interpretation of the work of art is based upon its intended use, audience, and the role of the artist and the work of art in its particular society. Students will expand their knowledge of history, geography, politics, religion, languages, and literature, as they explore the story of people told through the art they created.

This is a semester long, introductory level course that works to familiarize the student with techniques and concepts in digital design.  Using Adobe Creative Suite focusing on Photoshop and Illustrator, students will focus on studying traditional and experimental concepts in digital design.   Assignments will examine design within cultural and historical context, and explore a variety of design styles and concepts. Upon completion, students can advance into upper level courses like Art III and continue working with digital design.  If both Digital Photography & Digital Design are taken (need not be the same year) a student can earn a year of UC credit.  This Spring semester course is offered during the same period as Fall Digital Photography, so that students taking the full year do not have to go through any schedule changes.
