The annual Consent Assembly has been performed for freshmen and seniors at PHS/MHS since 2007. Members of the Piedmont for Consent Team have also worked to expand its reach to help other communities begin a discussion about consent.
In the past few years, members of the Piedmont for Consent Team, along with advisor Kimberly Taylor, have worked with sexual literacy educator Natasha Singh to expand the assembly's reach. Last year, members of the Piedmont for Consent Club and various other MHS and PHS students have been invited to perform The Consent Assembly more than nine times to full houses at high schools around Bay Area.
The assembly includes dramatic presentations of Bay Area high school students’ real accounts of sexual violence and consent. The assembly fosters empathy and critical thinking by showing a variety of perspectives from students who have navigated consent –from survivor to perpetrator to bystander.
The assembly also promotes a culture of inclusion by exploring various kinds of relationships and inspires students to embrace the values of affirmative consent, allyship, communication and healthy relationships. Piedmont for Consent Co-Presidents Macy Puckett and Eve Tellegen said that they are grateful for the chance to make an impact in communities beyond Piedmont and hope that the assembly will continue to grow in future years.
The P4C Team hopes that this assembly will promote conversations among peers, families and schools that will shift culture and create a more supportive and safe community for everyone.
